Even though we have been living under the cloud of Covid-19 for all this year, stock markets have continued to make progress.

Each week, we look at the performance of thousands of funds and over the year we have seen some impressive returns.

In our analysis we group together the Investment Association (IA) sectors based on their historic volatility. The least volatile sectors have been Standard Money Market and Short Term Money Market, which are in our ‘Safe Haven’ group. Although the volatility is low, with interest rates close to zero, so are the returns.

Our ‘Slow Ahead’ group contains the sectors that have been slightly more volatile. The funds tend to invest in bonds or a combination of bonds and equities. The sectors in this group are: Sterling Corporate Bonds, Sterling Strategic Bonds, Sterling High Yield, Mixed Investment 0-30% Shares, Mixed Investment 20-60% Shares, Mixed Investment 40-85% Shares, and Targeted Absolute Returns.

The best-performing funds from this group so far this year (to 19 December) are from the Mixed Investment 40-85% shares sector and the top two have gone up by more than 16%: BNY Mellon Mlt-Asst Balanced and Royal London Sustainable World. They are both currently in our demonstration portfolios, Ocean Liner and Tugboat.

The ‘Steady as She Goes’ group is made up of funds from the following sectors: UK Gilts, UK Index-Linked Gilts, Global Bonds, Property, Flexible Investment, UK Equity Income, UK All Companies, and UK Smaller Companies. These have been more volatile than the sectors in the ‘Slow Ahead’ group, but not as volatile as the sectors that are in the ‘Full Steam Ahead’ groups.

The top two funds are both from the UK Smaller Companies sector. This was the best-performing sector in the first quarter of the year, and the third best in the second quarter. It has not done so well in the second half of the year. Over the past three months, the average fund in the sector has posted a loss.

In third place is a UK All Companies fund, then it is a fund from the UK Equity Income sector and finally another UK All Companies fund. All these funds have gone up by more than 27%.

The most-volatile sectors go into our two ‘Full Steam Ahead’ groups. The ‘Developed’ group is home to the Global, American, Japanese, and European sectors.

The best-performing fund in this group has been the Schroder ISF Global Energy fund, which is up by over 48% so far this year. The next four funds are from the North America sector, which looks like it is going to be the best-performing sector in 2021.
